GRAND CHUTE — The defending WIAA Division 1 state baseball champion and the 2016 state champ were ousted in quarterfinal games on the opening day of the state tournament.
Green Bay Preble took a 3-2 victory over Kimberly in eight innings on Tuesday as Zach Renier hit an RBI single with two outs in the top of the eighth inning and relief pitcher Max Wagner held the lead as the Hornets (21-3) beat the defending state champion Papermakers (18-8) at Fox Cities Stadium.
Wagner, Renier and Jordan Gaulke each had two of Preble’s nine hits. Drew Lechnir with 2-for-4 with an RBI triple for Kimberly.

Hartland Arrowhead 2, Burlington 1
Joey Bartolone hit an RBI single to center field with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning and Derek Polczynski pitched two scoreless innings of relief as the Warhawks (24-3) knocked off the 2016 state champion Demons (20-8).
Alex Tanke hit a two-out RBI single in the fourth for Arrowhead. Burlington tied the game in the top of the fifth when Grant Tully hit an RBI single to center field.
Jacob Johnson had two of Arrowhead’s seven hits off Burlington’s Trey Krause, who struck out five and walked none.
Tully had two of Burlington’s six hits. Neither team had an extra-base hit. Burlington stranded nine runners.
